Why Web3 Job Titles Are Becoming Less Useful

A job title should help a company understand what someone does.

In Web3, that is becoming harder.

A Blockchain Engineer may spend their time writing Solidity contracts, building validator infrastructure, working on a consensus client, developing exchange APIs, or helping build a zero-knowledge proving system.

Those engineers may share a broad industry label while doing completely different work.

The same problem appears with titles such as Protocol Engineer, Web3 Developer, Smart Contract Engineer, Research Engineer, Security Engineer, and Infrastructure Engineer.

Web3 has become technically deeper, and the titles have struggled to keep pace.

For hiring companies, this creates a practical problem. A title can help start the search, while the actual work behind that title determines whether the candidate fits.

“Blockchain Engineer” Now Covers Several Careers

The phrase Blockchain Engineer once worked reasonably well as a broad description.

Today, it can hide several very different technical profiles.

Web3.career describes the title “crypto engineer” as one of the most overloaded engineering labels in the industry and separates it into areas such as protocol engineering, smart contract engineering, applied cryptography, and backend engineering.

A protocol engineer may work on consensus, execution, networking, validator clients, or chain architecture using languages such as Rust, Go, or C++.

A smart contract engineer may spend most of their time working with Solidity, token systems, DeFi protocols, testing frameworks, and on-chain integrations.

An applied cryptography engineer may work on zero-knowledge proofs, multi-party computation, privacy systems, or cryptographic libraries.

A backend engineer at a crypto company may work mainly with APIs, databases, distributed services, custody systems, and transaction infrastructure.

These engineers can all reasonably appear under a broad blockchain title.

Their skills are still very different.

Web3 Has Become More Specialized

The title problem has grown because the industry itself has grown.

Electric Capital’s 2024 Developer Report analyzed 902 million code commits across 1.7 million repositories and found that established crypto developers produced 70% of measured code commits. It also found that one in three crypto developers worked across multiple chains.

That level of activity has created deeper technical ecosystems.

Engineers can now spend years working mainly on rollups, wallet infrastructure, interoperability, ZK, validators, DeFi protocols, developer tooling, security research, or on-chain data.

Those career paths create knowledge that a broad title cannot explain.

Someone listed as a Protocol Engineer may have deep experience with a specific consensus system. Another engineer with the same title may focus mainly on smart contract architecture.

A hiring team needs to understand the difference before deciding whether either candidate belongs in the process.

Titles Vary Between Companies

Company structure adds another problem.

A Senior Engineer at an early-stage protocol may own architecture, write production code, handle infrastructure, review other engineers, and work directly with founders.

A Senior Engineer at a larger company may operate inside a much narrower technical area.

The title stays the same while the responsibility changes.

The same applies to technical leadership.

A Technical Lead may manage people at one company, lead architecture at another, and remain a senior individual contributor somewhere else.

This makes previous ownership more useful than title alone.

Recruiters need to understand the systems the candidate worked on, the decisions they made, how independently they operated, and the level of responsibility they carried.

That information gives the title meaning.

Web3 Ecosystems Add Another Layer

Web3 developers increasingly work across several ecosystems.

Electric Capital found that one in three crypto developers worked across multiple chains in 2024, compared with fewer than one in ten in 2015.

That creates technical profiles that are difficult to summarize with one label.

An engineer may have worked with Ethereum, Base, Solana, Polygon, and Arbitrum while moving between smart contracts, infrastructure, integrations, and tooling.

Another engineer may spend several years going very deep inside one ecosystem.

Both experiences can be valuable, depending on the role.

The hiring company needs to know whether it needs broad ecosystem knowledge, deep expertise in one environment, or experience with a specific technical problem.

The job title will rarely answer that on its own.

The Stack Often Says More Than the Title

Technical stacks can provide a clearer starting point.

A role involving Rust, distributed systems, P2P networking, consensus, and validator architecture immediately tells the recruiter more than “Blockchain Engineer.”

A role involving Solidity, Foundry, DeFi integrations, upgradeable contracts, and smart contract testing describes another type of engineer.

A position built around cryptography, circuits, proof systems, and prover optimization points toward another talent market entirely.

The stack does not give the whole picture either, because experienced engineers often learn new tools.

It still helps define the technical environment around the role.

For recruiters, this makes sourcing more focused.

Instead of searching for a title and hoping the right person appears, the search can begin with the systems and problems the person will actually work on.

Ownership Makes the Role Clearer

Another useful way to define technical roles is through ownership.

A company can describe what the person will be responsible for six or twelve months after joining.

A protocol engineer might own part of the execution layer.

An infrastructure engineer might take responsibility for validator operations and observability.

A wallet engineer might own transaction simulation and signing infrastructure.

A developer tooling engineer might take responsibility for an SDK used by outside developers.

These descriptions tell candidates much more about the job.

They also help recruiters evaluate previous experience because they can search for people who have already carried similar responsibility.

Clear ownership makes the role easier to understand from both sides.

Seniority Is Especially Difficult to Read

Seniority creates another layer of ambiguity.

Titles such as Senior, Staff, Principal, and Lead do not follow one standard across Web3 companies.

A Staff Engineer at one organization may operate at the same level as a Principal Engineer somewhere else. A Lead Engineer may manage a team, own architecture, or simply be the most experienced person working on a specific product.

Recruiters therefore need evidence of operating level.

A strong candidate should be able to explain the size and complexity of the systems they owned, the decisions they made, the people they worked with, and how much technical responsibility they carried.

This gives the hiring team a clearer view of seniority than the title alone.

Titles Can Also Create False Negatives

Over-reliance on titles can cause hiring teams to miss relevant people.

A distributed systems engineer may have the right background for protocol development even without a blockchain title.

A cryptography researcher may be a strong candidate for a ZK team.

A traditional security engineer may have experience that transfers well into wallet or infrastructure security.

A compiler engineer may be relevant to virtual machine or proving-system work.

Strict title matching can remove these people too early.

The technical problem should define which backgrounds deserve consideration.

That gives recruiters room to find candidates whose previous job titles look different while their experience maps closely to the actual work.

Job Descriptions Need More Technical Precision

As titles become broader, job descriptions need to become more specific.

A strong Web3 job description should explain the systems the engineer will work on, the problems they are expected to solve, the technologies currently in use, and the responsibility they will carry.

It should also separate essential experience from knowledge that can be learned after joining.

This helps candidates understand whether the role fits their background.

It also helps recruiters search more accurately because the target becomes based on real work rather than a collection of broad keywords.

Web3 hiring becomes much easier when everyone understands what the role actually means.

Recruiters Need to Read Beyond the Headline

A recruiter working in Web3 cannot stop at the title.

They need to understand what happened underneath it.

That requires studying previous companies, products, technical stacks, repositories, public contributions, and the actual responsibilities described by the candidate.

Two profiles may both say Senior Blockchain Engineer while representing completely different types of experience.

A recruiter needs enough technical context to recognize those differences before the candidates reach the client.

This is especially important as Web3 develops more specialist roles.

The titles may remain broad for years.

The technical work underneath them will keep becoming more specific.
