The Jobs Web3 Created That Barely Existed Five Years Ago

The Stack Created New Careers

Ethereum’s scaling strategy now relies heavily on Layer 2 rollups, which execute transactions away from Mainnet and use Ethereum for settlement and security.

That created work around sequencers, proving systems, nodes, data availability, bridges, monitoring, and execution infrastructure. Roles such as rollup engineer and sequencer engineer have become much easier to recognize as dedicated hiring categories.

The same happened with zero-knowledge technology.

ZK systems existed long before the recent Web3 market, but production use has expanded demand for ZK engineers, prover engineers, cryptography engineers, and circuit engineers. These roles can involve cryptography, proof systems, virtual machines, hardware optimization, and protocol engineering.

The talent pool is also broader than crypto. Strong candidates may come from mathematics, compilers, formal methods, cryptography, or high-performance systems.

MEV Became Its Own Engineering Area

MEV also created a new technical layer.

Flashbots and related infrastructure introduced specialized systems around searchers, validators, builders, relayers, transaction bundles, and block construction.

An MEV engineer may need experience in Ethereum, networking, low-latency systems, trading infrastructure, market structure, and smart contracts.

This means a strong candidate may come from quantitative development or traditional trading infrastructure rather than from a blockchain company.

Wallets Became More Technical

Wallet engineering has also changed.

Account abstraction and ERC-4337 introduced infrastructure such as UserOperations, bundlers, paymasters, programmable permissions, and gas sponsorship.

That created more specialized roles around smart accounts and account abstraction.

These engineers may work on wallet security, transaction simulation, recovery systems, developer tooling, permissions, and the infrastructure between applications and the blockchain.

A traditional wallet engineer and a smart account engineer can therefore have very different experience, even when their titles look similar.

Proof of Stake Expanded Infrastructure Hiring

Ethereum’s move to proof of stake in 2022 also changed the talent market.

Validators now rely on execution clients, consensus clients, monitoring systems, key management, networking, and operational reliability.

That increased demand for validator infrastructure engineers, staking engineers, protocol operations specialists, and SRE-style roles.

Many candidates for these positions can come from distributed systems, cloud infrastructure, or reliability engineering rather than directly from Web3.

The Titles Are Still Catching Up

The main hiring challenge is that technical specialization is growing faster than job titles.

Someone may move from backend engineering into validator infrastructure, from cryptography into ZK systems, from trading infrastructure into MEV, or from smart contracts into rollup engineering.

Their title may not clearly show how much their work has changed.

For hiring teams, this makes context more important. The useful questions are what systems the candidate built, which parts they owned, what production responsibilities they had, and whether that experience fits the technical environment of the company.

Web3 Hiring Has to Follow the Technology

Many of today’s Web3 roles existed only as small technical niches five years ago.

Now they are becoming established career paths.

As the stack continues to specialize, new roles will keep appearing before recruiting vocabulary fully catches up.

For Web3 companies, that means strong hiring depends on understanding the technology behind the title.
